If the newest release of Wordpress can not offer a feature you need, you have two alternatives:
1) you can install a 3rd party plugin, or
2) you can write your own custom code to increase the features of Wordpress.

Wordpress plugins are programming code intended to improve the features of a conventional Wordpress installation. A plugin that is well written "drags and drops" but does not change the basic code of Wordpress. By plugins you can customize your website according to your requirements without being necessary to alter the core of Wordpress because it has been created modularly.

Wordpress has proved to be effective software offering numerous features like wordpress plugins, a platform for blogging, etc. Wordpress plugins make it possible for users and designer to increase the features of their blogs. They also supply tools for blogs and websites adaptation in order to match the theme and genre.

If you haven’t dealt with blogging before, you may not know that there are numerous plug-ins which are available free of charge. Hence, you can look through availabilities and install only those plugins that will make your blog successful.

If you want to have access to plugins, you have to log into your wordpress blog because plugins are placed in the admin section of your blog. Then, you will be able to see a “plugins” tab and after you click on the tab, you will be given a list of wordpress plugins. A description of the plugins functions is also available, as well as an indication of the wordpress version that has to be installed. In order to activate the plugin you need, you just have to click on it.

Another option is to go to the wordpress website where you will find multiple new plugins and download some directly from there. You can also find information about the most popular plugins and more detailed data about every particular plugin.

Among the most widespread and most downloaded plugins are Akismet, WP Super Cache, All in one SEO pack, Google XML sitemaps and Wordpress Stats. Google XML sitemaps is a very good alternative since it generates XML sitemaps compatible with your wordpress blog. All wordpress created pages are supported by the plugin which means that when you produce or edit a post, the sitemap is updated and all chief search engines (e.g. Google, MSN, ASK) will know about the modifications.

The installation of plugins isn’t difficult at all. All you have to do is download the full directory to your wp-content/plugins directory using ftp. CHMOD 666 will help you make sitemap.xml and sitemap.xml.gz writable. After that you activate the plugin from your blog and start the sitemap construction. One of the greatest advantages is that the sitemap does not require constant reconstruction in case of updates and modifications. The process is automatic.

Search engine optimization becomes much simpler via wordpress plugins. Obviously, search engines “like” blogs a lot because they are frequently updated. If you choose and install the most appropriate plugins, your blogs will be more easily picked up by the search engines.
